Craft Worm Castings

Craft Worm Castings is a new service provided by Sertia Soils, makers of VermiCast™ Premium Worm Castings and the Cast and Frass™ Grow Mix Living Soil.  The new program is a great way to introduce Permaculture to your home recycling efforts.  Generating worm castings from your vegan food waste is an environmentally friendly way to reduce dumping into landfills and organically regenerate the soil around you, improve plant live, and increase vegetable and fruit yields from your gardens.

Worm Castings are also known as vermicompost.  Castings are the result of worms breaking down organic material like plants, grains, fruits and vegetables by eating what microbes break down through composting.  The worms create manure that has a high concentration of humus thus improving on traditional compost.  Humus is a spongy carbon-based substance that helps with water retention and amends soils for better aeration.    Worms also improve compost by making nutrients more available to the plants due to the enzymes in their gut which prepares nutrients for immediate availability and slow release.

Slow release of nutrients is important because it reduces the risk of burning due to over availability of nutrients.   Worm Castings also regulate the PH value of the soil.  By adding worm castings to your gardens, and potted plants you will water less often as worm castings retain water and slowly releasing as needed by the plant.  This water retention also improves microbiology and beneficial fungi within the soil.  Beneficial fungi seek out phosphate and other nutrients that is important for flowing and producing fruit and nuts.  Beneficial fungi are known as Mycorrhizal fungi, they create a network between other plants and share nutrients and microbes.  Almost like a highway connecting cities to share resources.

It is important to note, as produce prices increase, growing your own fruits and vegetables will save you money.  A bonus is it gives you the satisfaction of eating and feeding your family organically grown plants, fruits and vegetables.

Community program:  Sertia Soils will donate 5% of worm castings generated from the Craft Worm Castings program to local community gardens.
